What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral which was used extensively in construction throughout the 1900s. It was added to all kinds of construction materials to give them fireproofing and various other benefits. It was only in 1990 that scientists discovered that asbestos is actually a cancer causing carcinogen responsible for a range of potentially fatal respiratory diseases.
If asbestos containing materials are in good condition and undisturbed then they pose little to no risk to health. It is only when the product is disturbed that fibres are released into the air – This is when asbestos becomes harmful.
Do I have asbestos in my home?
Asbestos was widely used in home construction from 1930 to around 2000, particularly from 1960 onwards. Houses/flats built around this time may contain asbestos materials. Properties built since the mid 80’s are unlikely to have asbestos in the fabric of the building and from 1990 extremely unlikely. Asbestos was outlawed in the Europe in 1999.
Where is asbestos found in the home?
Asbestos was commonly used in many ways inside and outside of buildings:
STEAM PIPES, BOILERS, and FURNACE DUCTS insulated with an asbestos blanket or asbestos paper tape. These materials may release asbestos fibers if damaged, repaired, or removed improperly.RESILIENT FLOOR TILES (vinyl asbestos, asphalt, and rubber), the backing on VINYL SHEET FLOORING, and ADHESIVES used for installing floor tile. Sanding tiles can release fibers. So may scraping or sanding the backing of sheet flooring during removal.CEMENT SHEET, MILLBOARD, and PAPER used as insulation around furnaces and woodburning stoves. Repairing or removing appliances may release asbestos fibers. So may cutting, tearing, sanding, drilling, or sawing insulation.DOOR GASKETS in furnaces, wood stoves, and coal stoves. Worn seals can release asbestos fibers during use.SOUNDPROOFING OR DECORATIVE MATERIAL sprayed on walls and ceilings. Loose, crumbly, or water-damaged material may release fibers. So will sanding, drilling, or scraping the material.PATCHING AND JOINT COMPOUNDS for walls and ceilings, and TEXTURED PAINTS. Sanding, scraping, or drilling these surfaces may release asbestos.ASBESTOS CEMENT ROOFING, SHINGLES, and SIDING. These products are not likely to release asbestos fibers unless sawed, dilled, or cut.ARTIFICIAL ASHES AND EMBERS sold for use in gas-fired fireplaces. Also, other older household products such as FIREPROOF GLOVES, STOVE-TOP PADS, IRONING BOARD COVERS, and certain HAIRDRYERS.AUTOMOBILE BRAKE PADS AND LININGS, CLUTCH FACINGS, and GASKETS.
Some other areas include:
Some roofing and siding shingles are made of asbestos cement.Houses built between 1930 and 1950 may have asbestos as insulation.Asbestos may be present in textured paint and in patching compounds used on wall and ceiling joints. Their use was banned in 1977.Artificial ashes and embers sold for use in gas-fired fireplaces may contain asbestos.Older products such as stove-top pads may have some asbestos compounds.Walls and floors around woodburning stoves may be protected with asbestos paper, millboard, or cement sheets.Asbestos is found in some vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives.Hot water and steam pipes in older houses may be coated with an asbestos material or covered with an asbestos blanket or tape.Oil and coal furnaces and door gaskets may have asbestos insulation.

Straightforward Process – No Delay on Results
Kit showed up with mask, antibacterial hand wipes (not sure why), coveralls, plastic bags, and a mask.Attached photo in my review of what their report looks like (the results we got). Used a spray bottle with soapy water to moisten the popcorn on the ceiling and scraped a 1 inch square sample out. Submitted the results, they had a 24 hour turnaround on the results which was quite nice.Besides that, customer support is also excellent. I had a question and they answered same day. Asked them if I could submit dust samples. The answer is yes, you can press tape on a surface to grab the dust, fold it on itself, then drop it in the plastic bag.Next up is figuring out how to patch the square marks on my popcorn ceiling, oh boy… Good problem to have though. Remediation is NOT CHEAP. Fixing popcorn ceiling scrapes is.Nitpicks (very minor):- Would have preferred getting the kit without all the extra equipment as I already have it, but the kit they offer without the PPE didn’t state whether they included instructions on how we can collect samples. I just bought this one so I can make sure I do get the instructions on collection.- Spelling error in the manual that comes with it, needs some proofreading and updating so it’s accurate to the current kit, like explaining what the antibac wipes are for.PS: Get your popcorn ceilings tested, don’t trust the people selling the house, it’s so cheap to do it. Some houses built after 1977 may still have asbestos building materials in them, it’s not easy for those rules to be enforced.

Fast results & easy to read report
I ordered kit with mask, body suit and 2 tests. It arrived in a couple of days. I suited up, put mask on, covered my shoes with bags, went up in attic and collected 2 samples as my attic has 2 different insulation. I followed instruction in kit to bag and label samples properly, I filled in the provided form and got code that goes on forms and samples by going to their site. I mailed it via USPS priority mail. It got there in couple of days. I got SMS when samples arrived and update message when results were emailed to me. My results were negative. I highly recommend this service. Note in case URL provided in instructions don’t work just google it and you will find their site.

Very quick professional responses
I had to get samples tested for asbestos on an old building that I am demoing. The product arrived very quickly and was easy to use. Instructions were easy to follow. There was some hiccups on getting the samples to the lab (follow their intructions and get tracking for the package, using priority usps) but the emailed responses for support were quick and professional. I would highly recommend!

Glacial response times
The website SAYS results within 72 hours of sample arrival. So when I saw that, I ordered thinking weâd get the issues resolved quickly and move on with the loo renovation.Turns out, the website is a complete LIE.After 88 hours, I still have no results. So I went to the website chat for help. It took over an HOUR for a customer service response and then they tell me itâs 72 hours business days.So now I have to wait several more days to hopefully get results.Do not use this lab. But, if you absolutely must, BEWARE. And donât schedule any work on your renovation until the results are in hand. At least an additional WEEK.Too bad I had to give 1 star – Iâd give zero if it were possible

I would buy again
Great service! I was worried about old flooring so decided to buy this product. The directions was easy to follow. I did pay the extra $20.00 to have more than one layer tested. I did not pay for the extra cost of tracking the package to verify it was not lost in mail. This would be paid to your local post office not the asbestos company. I would buy again and recommend! I hope this helps others.

Everything almost as expected, but everything was included.
So i’ll skip the stuff everyone else said and state that my kit did ‘not’ come in a box. It was just in a plastic bag. I got very skeptical seeing that since the pictures all show a box. Everything was there, and labeled for the most part, and instructions were good. Although the kit includes 2 large bags, one orange, one clear, which have no indication of what to use them for in the instructions or on the bags themselves but we figured they were for putting the suit/mask/gloves into them after use. The hardest part of the entire process is getting the samples into the small bags. Scrape, cut, whatever process you use that isn’t a needle nose pliers, makes you try to ‘catch’ the material in the bag. Not that easy depending upon where you are working. Maybe a paper catcher would be great with a wide mouth, then dump the material you collect into the bag, and toss the catcher away. But anyway, its doable, just not necessarily easy. I would love to see some cheap booties in the kit (hint hint). The material was sent the next day, we’ll see if we get a response within a few days of the package arriving at the lab.

Great product
So I sent this by UPS this is so critical I wouldnât recommend sending unless you send certified mail if you use USPS. It took 5 days for lab to receive and I got the results in 2 business days so one day earlier than promised. Note results come back in percentages which is a positive test. If it negative it will say â Not detectedâ. This was a 70 something dollars test a company quoted me 350.00 flat to test.Follow the instruction, save money and do it yourself. Save those dollars for clean up if needed.

Very Satisfied
I made sure to use tracking on the package I sent to them. It took USPS 11 days to deliver it. Once it arrived, it only took 3 days to get the results.I’m happy with the process and the service.
