Budget friendly all rounder
For the price you canât beat what you get. Everything is all set up and ready to go once you receive the rod. The flies work pretty well for the most part, the click and pawl reel is a bit old school but honestly itâs worth buying the kit just for that. The reel is fairly solid quality and the rod does what itâs suppose to do. Itâs perfect for the budget conscious consumer and those not wanting to drop $300 for a fly set up. The price point is perfect alone for beginners, kids, or just as an option to keep in your car for those unexpected fishing needs. This kit doesnât include backing but itâs not much of a problem with how much fly line is included. The phone handle can become a little skippering when constantly soaked with water. The click and pawl system doesnât really provide much drag but the audible click is satisfying to hear when you hook a fish. Overall itâs a fantastic kit at a wonderful price point.

Good for the price and advice for new buyers.
I have owned a few of these over the years for panfish and small pond/stream fishing so I knew what to expect. And over all a decent basic kit for the price.A few tips for those new to them. When assembling the rod for use put the section together slightly out of alignment and then twist it into alignment. This will reduce the tendency of the sections from coming loose during false casts which is something this rod ( and most low cost fly rods ) suffer from. The line is a level line which is fine for short distances but not for longer casts or slightly heavy flies.I never thought pf a level line as a good beginners line for these reasons. Good for small trout streams not so good for most other situations. Consider getting a weight forward line which has a long heavier section at the front of the line making it easier to load the rod and get more distance with fewer false casts. You can get these for about $20 and up depending on what you want it for.The leader is short and changing flies is going to reduce the usable portion fast so learn to make your own tapered leaders. It’s very easy and lets you make them in lengths for any situation. And another good idea is making a loop in the end of the fly line for loop to loop connections for leader to line. This extends the fly line life span to years even under heavy use. It’s also easy to do.The reel is simple and plastic which again for the price is expected. No drag, just a switch to turn the click on or off. off means the reel will free spool so best to leave it on as you won’t be reeling in most fish anyway. These are whats called rim drag reels the handle side of the reel is larger and designed for using the palm of your hand pressed against it to create drag which is how it’s been done for a few hundred years and works just fine for smaller fish. If you target bigger fish you will want a reel with a true internal drag as it’s just easier though not required until really big fish. these like most fly reels are nick named knuckle busters as when line goes out the handle spins so if you have a fish peeling line off the reel be aware of where your fingers are when palming the rim to slow it down. All this said I will be ordering a couple more for the kids along with weight forward lines for each.

It’s just okay
The martin fly rod combo was our first fly rod setup we purchased. The rod seems pretty good. I know fly reels are not the important part of your setup but this reel has no drag. If you typically fish from the bank I think it would be fine. But if you intend to get in the water I would recommend a reel that you can set some drag. I was constantly trying to keep the line from spinning all out of the reel while standing in a water current. Will it catch fish… Yes you can catch fish with the martin setup. We have since purchased a couple other rods and reels from a different manufacture that I enjoy using a lot more though.

Just What I Wanted To Try Out Fly Fishing
I typically use a spinning reel and sometimes a baitcaster and noticed a guy fly fishing at the local urban pond near my house. He was catching plenty small bass so I thought I would give fly fishing a try. I didn’t want to break the bank as I wasn’t sure I would like fly fishing. After some research I saw this Martin combo on sale with everything I need, except a case but that wasn’t a deal breaker. I have only used it about 4 times now and some of my casts are better than others, but I have caught about 20 panfish (bluegill/sunfish) and 4 small bass so far. I figure I already have gotten my money’s worth from this purchase. Some reviews complained about the 3-piece rod separating but that has not been an issue for me. I haven’t even bothered to check it. I did notice it was a tight fit between sections when putting the rod together, so maybe Martin (e.g. Zebco) has addressed this. I also saw at least one complaint about only having 5 flies instead of 6. The yarn without a hook is for newbies like me to practice in the backyard.Since most reviews mentioned the quality of the flies was iffy, I did buy assorted mix of flies, that were cheap as well, as I figure I’ll be losing flies in trees, etc. I have caught on the included popper, the included wooly bugger looking fly, and a couple of flies from the other collection I bought. As I have only had this combo a few weeks, I really can’t speak to the long-term durability. Also, as this is my first fly fishing set up, I don’t have comparative experience with other combos. However, I have been able to cast, catch fish, and have had a fun time doing it. I will keep using this combo for now and decide after I’ve used it a bit more if I want to step up to a nice set up.

Great rod, only 5 flies though
Rod works great, only 2 problems, the fly line does not have a fused loop making it hard to change liters and the red Fly was only a piece of red string and I would recommend getting different flies (some of the the ones they supplied arenât the greatest quality) but all in all, a good starter set
