Coffee on the go!
Normally when I go on a trip, I’m never sure what to expect with local coffee culture in the area we’re traveling to, so I almost always have my Aeropress setup which includes the Aeropress, coffee, kettle, and accessories. Since this all can take quite a bit of space, I have been on the hunt to minimize the travel coffee setup, depending on where I’m going, and decided to grab the OutIn Nano, as it seems to be more of an all in one device.First of all, it arrived with such fancy presentation. The box contains a handful of recipes, a manual, warranty card, machine, one Nespresso pod holder, one coffee/espresso portafiller, a measuring cup, cup and charging cable. The water reservoir can fit upto 80ml of water (hot, or cold) and the portafilter can fit upto 7g of grounds. Get a paper towel, or towel ready because this can get rather messy. It takes about 3 minutes to heat up water using the device, otherwise you can go in with hot water and make your coffee right away. When using grounds, you can easily use the measuring cup as your tamper to smooth out the surface. When using Nespresso pods, you can just pop it right in the adapter and get going. You can just set the Nano in the cup to make the whole operation hands free, otherwise you’re welcome to hold onto the unit once it’s extracting to complete your cup. I will note, if you fill your water to the max line, and using the designated cup, your creama could get lost onto the portafilter, so just be aware of that. I noticed the nespresso comes out a bit bitter and sour, and loose grounds had a smoother taste with little bitterness left behind. Unfortunately, temperature seems to be a bit cooler than preferred when using the device. On top of that, you will be using more battery power if you do use the device to heat up the water for you. After making a good handful of nespresso pod, and cups with grounds, this is quite literally one shot, nothing more. This would definitely be a good way to go through a bunch of nespresso pods for sure! Keep in mind, you do lose a little bit of water in the extraction process too, so in that case I started filling the water reservoir up to the max line and lift it up from the cup before it was done extracting. In addition, when using the device to heat your water, you will use up the battery more, but can still work out at least 5 servings before the battery runs down. If you had hot water ready, you can definitely work out a few more than that for sure!Overall, this is what I’d like to call a great road trip coffee maker, or for “snack” coffee, when you just want a little pick me up on the road, or elsewhere. I spend a lot of time in my car for work, so to minimize mess, I can easily grab a couple of nespresso pods, the device, and have some water ready to go! The one thing I do wish it had was some kind of carrying case that was made for it, because carrying around that box can be quite cumbersome. Either way, I’m sure I have something that would work for it!Update: I found that the OutIn actually sells a stainless steel portafilter kit, as well as a carrying case (separately of course) so I’m considering grabbing them, otherwise I may make them a Christmas request!
