For 2015, Shimano’s 105 groupset got a few high-profile upgrades. It’s gone to 11-speed, and now has many of the same crankset technologies seen in Dura-Ace and Ultegra. As you’d expect, changes to the cassette and crankset also necessitate changes to the chain that connects them. Shimano designed the new SLX/105 CN-HG601 11-Speed Chain as one of the new 11-speed chains from the Japanese manufacturer. The HG601 differs from the HG901 in that it uses solid pins instead of hollow. This amounts to a weight gain of about 0. 08 grams per link, but it also adds to the durability and reliability of the only chain worthy of being associated with the hardworking 105 group. Despite its slightly higher weight, it does receive the same revolutionary new Sil-Tec ultra-low friction treatment as its more expensive sibling. Sil-Tec reduces friction dramatically while also increasing the chain’s longevity and decreasing noise. Please note that while it’s specifically designed for the new 11-speed 105 5800 and SLX M7000 groupsets, the CN-HG601 chain is also compatible with all of Shimano’s 11-speed drivetrains.

Quiet = efficient?
It’s a chain that makes the wheels go ’round. I’m giving it 5 stars because it’s noticeably quieter than the new KMC chain I bought at the same time. (Comparing when both are freshly waxed.) The Shimano is essentially silent, while the KMC is only “quiet”. That seems to imply that the design is different in a significant enough way that makes some difference even though I’m not using it on a Shimano crank and cassette. Note that this is a uni-directional chain and the quick link is not rated for reuse, but most people seem to have no problem reusing it several times. I’ll probably replace the quick link after several waxes.

Best 11-speed chain for the money
The 11-speed Shimano 105 bike chain is hands down the best value chain you can find. Not only does it come from a reputable brand known for its quality and durability, but it also offers outstanding performance. Shifting is smooth, and the chainâs longevity is impressive. If youâre looking for a reliable and budget-friendly chain for your 11-speed bike, the Shimano 105 chain is the top choice.

Not usable
This chain isnât sold with a connecting rivot, meaning that when you alter the chain length it will be impossible to reconnect the links at the required length

Quicklink attachment
Once I figured out a technique for getting the quick link to snap into place, it was easy. The technique is to stand over the bike, hold both brakes, and step down on one pedal. There were no instructions for getting the link to snap tight.
