FASTER SET-UP: Each time you check your lure, or better yet, reel in a fish, you’ll want to get your line back into the strike zone as quick as possible. If the fish struck at 100′ of line out behind the boat, just flip the reel into free-spool and let line spool out until the line counter hits 100′. This is much faster and more accurate than pulling line off the reel by hand and counting number of pulls.

Great value for the money. Reels feel quality. Line counters arent 100% accurate all the time and are off by up to a foot when calibrating. Spool is only 3/4 of the way full, even with braid, when calibrated. A full spool would be nice. Screws on the line counter housing were not all the way tightened down, i own 6 of the ls40r models, making the line counter jump and stop counting at 99â. Took them all apart and put some grease on the line counter main gears and worm gears and put back together. All the other gears appeared to be greased properly. I Pulled line out again and it was rolling over to 100â. The 100â reel does not display in the window all the way, kinda annoying… Should work good now though. Good reel for the money.

Almost a great reel.
Nice reel. Well boxed . Smooth.The crank handle shaft is a bit loose. Either assembled poorly or wrong bearing. Not sure yet. Handle and shaft have excessive play. I’ll look into it and update this review.After a bit of work. Shims and lube (see vid) this is a great reel so far. I’ll load it up and take it fishing. Let ya know….. After a day on the water using this reel….. For the money, it’s a decent reel. Not great, but decent. An average casting reel. No complaints. Counter is accurate. Drag is a bit grabby. Time will correct that. All in all a keeper.

Line counter broke on first let down.
Well I got the reel and new rod had to wait for fishing season so it is out of return window. It is light and feels like a kinda decent product until the first time we used it. Set it out to troll line counter was intermittent. So I used it any ways. trolled about 10 minutes reeled it in then tried to reset the counter it pushes in but nobody is home. Well the next trip we tried again and this time it still didn’t work but we hooked up on a fish so who cares at that point. The drag goes from toddler to roided out body builder instantly and snaps the line. and lost about 20 dollars of braid and a 30 dollar lure. Well I decided cause the window of return is gone to pull it apart and see if it is simple. Well the line counter is a plastic gear on gear but attached to a inch or so rod that is fisher price at best. Somehow when the braid broke it got in the line leveling mechanism and was hell cleaning it out, not to mention the birds nest on the reel I had to chop it off. I think by the time the loss of line and lure should have just bought a Penn Senator and been sure it would last 20 years with no maintenance like the rest of my Penns.

Good reel for the price
I purchased this reel even with some poor reviews. It is on the top 10 salt water conventional reel list so decided to go for it. First be aware this is a Burning Shark reel as marked on the product. It is smooth operating and drag, bite clicker, and on off switch work fine. It is noisy compared to other reels I have but its not too bad. One thing you need to do when/if you get this reel. Check and tighten every screw or bolt on the reel. Several were loose. take the side plates off and dab a little Penn reel grease on the working gears and also put a little oil where needed as well. Mine was virtually dry. I do the screw tighten and grease/oil application on all new reels, but this one was the dry reel winner! Otherwise a good reel for the price. It does not spool line evenly, high at the middle lower at both ends. Only Salt water reel I have that didn’t come will reel bracket! Had to buy a Penn bracket. It worked.

Beyond that gears are strong and other features function properly.

Look over your reel, prior to your first outing
I troll on Lake Erie and needed a couple new reels, I figured I would give this a try! These reels are heavy and they have nice crisp locking! I do like the reels but first time out the handle fell off one of the reels and I had stop fishing and find a screwdriver to remove the set screw on the handle so I could put the nut back on the reel handle, when building the reels please pay attention to your workmanship, wasnât happy! Therefore, I give this a low rating since it didnât last three hours!

I found this reel excellent for off shore fishing especially for the reef and sandy areas. The drag is easy to adjust and and seems handle some large snapper /reef fish without to much hassle. Whilst I was interested in the line counter but I notice when dropping the line in deep water the meter is clicking over quite fast but if you slow the drop by adding some drag then the counter is quite readable. Overall excellent value and a trusty reliable reel for saltwater fishing.
