Looking for the Best Primer on Patient Safety?
“Understanding Patient Safety” is the best primer on patient safety currently available. I highly recommend this text — as a patient safety researcher, as a medical educator, and as a clinican leader. For someone new to the patient safety field, this text is perfect. It is very well written with lots of good illustrations and comprehensive coverage of all the key topics. It is substantive but not overly technical. There are excellent references at the end of each chapter. For someone tasked with teaching others about patient safety, this book is ‘gold’. The text provides a wonderful ‘map’ to the field of patient safety — highlighting, summarizing, and exploring all the key topics. The book would serve as an excellent text for introductory courses at undergraduate programs, medical schools, schools of public health, and patient safety institutes. Finally, the expert will find the text incredibly useful as a way to quickly brush up on those topics that are less familiar. This is a ‘must have’ for anyone in the patient safety field!

Great book, easy read
This book breaks down the topic of patient safety into easy reading chapters that are very comprehensive in dealing with the subject matter. Each chapter ends with a review of important points which is helpful in recalling the material. The tables and figures within the book are well designed and complement the material. Particularly useful are the references at the end of each chapter and the appendices at the end of the book. Anyone with a little knowledge of medical terminology will be able to understand the examples given in the book. Well done.

excellent
I read Wachter’s 1st ediition several years ago and it was excellent. This edition is even better. There is new and expanded content, yet the book is still efficient and highly engaging. This book is oustanding for basic and intermediate level patient safety learners.

Simple, good intro to patient safety issues
Excellent book, written in a conversational tone, easy to read overview of patient safety. Great references if you want further reading. Dr. Wachter should learn, however, that not all physicians are men and not all nurses are women. Come on – it’s 2014.

Good intro text, easy to read format
Still written easy to read, reads more like a story than a textbook. Sometimes not enough detail is included to feel satisfactory for a topic but as an introduction covers the important topics as a general initial survey text

Wonderful!!
I bought an earlier version. This is amazingly simple, great stories to get the point across, and very accurate. Bob is a genius and well respected in the country. I think all RNs should read this.
